Our 9am Ocean Magic Marine Wildlife Adventure took us south of Discovery Island. Here our Skipper Jeff put us in excellent position to view Killer Whales. These were Resident Orca, members of L Pod. They were heading east to San Juan Island. Our crew of Mika (First Mate / Maine Biologist / Naturalist), Claire (Naturalist) and Jen (Biologist / Naturalist) filled out guests with information on these marine apex predators and the diverse eco-system of our west coast waters. We observed the Killer Whales as they rose from the deep and broke the surface in the sparking sunshine. Our 12:15 Ocean Magic took us off to view a pair of Humpback Whales. This mom and calf would show tail on each deep dive. Our tour then took us to San Juan Island to view some of L Pod resident Killer Whales. They were along the shoreline headed south as they worked the water for salmon. Another super day on the water with Prince of Whales!
Most of the images on the blog are shot with a 400 mm & 600 mm telephoto lenses. Because of our restrictions around wildlife (100+ meters), we use powerful lenses to better share orca activity that passengers see on their trips. Keep in mind this also heavily compresses space between objects. We also crop images for best blog viewing.
