Ocean magic Marine Wildlife Adventure Aug 23

The Prince of Whales vessel left the harbour with Capt. Scott in the wheelhouse. It was another sunny day out on the water. Crew mates, Mika, Lindsay and Casey shared the safety briefing and interesting information with our guests about the marine environment seen off the west coast. Our travels for the 12.15 this Friday afternoon took us east past Trail Island, where we saw Harbour Seals lazing on rocks. We traveled farther east and turned up Haro Strait to Captain Passage, between Prevost Island and Saltspring Island , where we encountered Transient Killer whales. They were milling around. They were taking several breaths at the surface and then disappearing for long dives. We watched these apex hunters, whose preference for marine mammals as a choice of prey, as they circled around in three small groups. Our guests were delighted with their encounter this summer afternoon.

Most of the images on the blog are shot with a 400 mm & 600 mm telephoto lenses. Because of our restrictions around wildlife (100+ meters), we use powerful lenses to better share orca activity that passengers see on their trips. Keep in mind this also heavily compresses space between objects. We also crop images for best blog viewing.
