Ocean Magic Marine Wildlife Adventure Sept 18

With warm temperatures, sunny skies and calm water all around the wildlife trips taken by our guests have been extraordinary. There is so much to see out there just off the harbour of Victoria. Capt David headed the Ocean Magic with Naturalists, Emily, Dan and Bo on board. We travelled toward the west where we were to encounter not only all four pinnipeds, ie Elephant and Harbour Seals, as well as California and Steller Sea Lions at Race Rocks, but a whole ‘super-pod ‘of Transient Orca, heading in from the west in Canadian waters. These marine mammal hunting whales, travel usually in small family groups but on occasion, several families meet up during their travels and form what is known as a ‘super-pod’ .This is what we were seeing this trip. There was great excitement to see 21 of these orca swimming together. We identified the T 137’s, along with others. The reflections of these majestic whales were breathtaking. What a beautiful way to spend an afternoon watching charismatic ORCA.
Our guests were treated to one of the best trips of the season and learned much from our knowledgeable naturalists on board.

Most of the images on the blog are shot with a 400 mm & 600 mm telephoto lenses. Because of our restrictions around wildlife (100+ meters), we use powerful lenses to better share orca activity that passengers see on their trips. Keep in mind this also heavily compresses space between objects. We also crop images for best blog viewing.
