The 12:15 Ocean Magic II sailed out into the sunshine and calm seas. We were headed east to the location of Resident Killer Whales we had viewed earlier. The members of L Pod had made it to San Juan Island when we reached them. They were very spread out, some off shore and more in shore. They were feeding on Salmon, up for a few breaths then down for a time, as they foraged for salmon. Our Skipper Scotty had us in great position to view the Killer Whales. Mika our Marine Biologist pointed out L89 Solstice and L79 Skana as they rose for air on the calm sea. We then stopped off at Trial island and viewed Harbour Seals and a Bald Eagle. Yet another beautiful afternoon on the water with Prince of Whales!
Most of the images on the blog are shot with a 400 mm telephoto lens. Because of our restrictions around wildlife (100+ meters), we use powerful lenses to better share orca activity that passengers see on their trips. Keep in mind this also heavily compresses space between objects. We also crop images for best blog viewing.
