It was another exciting afternoon of wildlife viewing. Capt. Scott headed the Ocean Magic vessel east toward San Juan Island on the last trip of the day, this Friday afternoon. Our guests on board were thrilled when we encountered a Bald Eagle flying in and settling on a channel marker off the Oak Bay Flats. Heading north up Haro Strait we found the Southern Resident Orca speeding south past the Whale Park on San Juan Island. With choppy water, plenty of sunshine and some wind in the air, K and J Pod were seen traveling so rapidly it was as if, the conditions on the water were energizing the Orca. Several of the young orca were so energetic that more than 25 breeches were witnessed. Our knowledgeable crew gave an in-depth commentary for our guests. What a fabulous wildlife trip once again with Prince of Whales!
Most of the images on the blog are shot with a 400 mm telephoto lens. Because of our restrictions around wildlife (100+ meters), we use powerful lenses to better share orca activity that passengers see on their trips. Keep in mind this also heavily compresses space between objects. We also crop images for best blog viewing.
