P.O.W. Charter ‘Orca Spirit’ vessel Aug 10th 4:30

With sunny skies and calm water the ‘Orca Spirit’ vessel left the harbour with many out of town guests on board. We even had a bridal party of 10, taking their first whale watching trip out of Victoria. We headed east to the west side of San Juan Island where many Orca were reported. We could see a number of Tribal Gill-net fishing boats stretched all the way down the coast of this picturesque Island, catching home-coming salmon. The whales appeared to be enjoying the fish that were caught in the nets. We could see that we had a ‘Superpod’ of Orca where J, K and L Pods come together to socialize during the summer months. Whales were everywhere. Some were porpoising toward boats, and others diving beneath boats. It was an amazing show put on by these west coast, black and white, marine mammals. Our return journey took in views of a Bald Eagle at Chatham and Discovery Islands. This was truly a memorable encounter with these three pods, this Wednesday late afternoon.

Most of the images on the blog are shot with a 400 mm telephoto lens. Because of our restrictions around wildlife (100+ meters), we use powerful lenses to better share orca activity that passengers see on their trips. Keep in mind this also heavily compresses space between objects. We also crop images for best blog viewing.
