Happy Holidays, Just a quick note!

December 24, 2014

Happy Holidays everyone!

We just wanted to send out a quick note to summarize our recent sightings and outline our seasonal schedule.

Last week skipper Rush took out a boat with some very keen passengers in fairly rough weather. Rush is one of our most experienced zodiac captains, and all his passengers felt safe and comfortable in the less than smooth water. Things calmed down long enough for them head out west, past Race Rocks, where they caught up with three humpback whales!

This is a tad unusual for humpbacks, as most are breeding in Hawaii or Mexico, but it is thought that non-breeding individuals (young ones and old ones) may not migrate, and stay and feed in nutrient rich waters for longer. Whatever the reason, Rush’spassengers were thrilled!

This week marked a slightly sad, but truly remarkable occasion for us. We had our first No Whale Day… since MAY! Now, just to be clear, there were trips here and there that were unlucky and didn’t manage to catch up to whales in the summer. But since May, there have been no full days where no trips saw a whale, until Friday. We sent out one single trip, and Rush had a great day showing off the other wildlife our coast has to offer including seals, sea lions, bald eagles, great blue herons, and river otters.

This season was an incredible one for us, and will definitely go down in the record books. We knew this day would come, but the first day without whales was later than even the most hopeful of us could have possibly imagined.

The wildlife tours have begun, but we never stop looking for whales! Let’s get out on the water and see if this no whale day is just a blip in the greatest season ever!

Just a reminder, the Prince of Whales Victoria office will be closed December 24th-26th, so if you want to pick up a gift certificate for the wildlife lover in your family, give us a call or stop by tomorrow. Current hours are 9am-4pm.

And don’t forget to check us out on Facebook, where we are counting down the top photos of 2014! We’ve got 6 categories including boats/scenery, birds, pinnipeds, rare sightings, humpbacks and on New Year’s Eve, the best orca photos of the year!

Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas from the Prince of Whales Crew!
