Ocean Magic II Marine Wildlife Adventure Aug 19 3:30

September 2, 2012

The Ocean Magic set sail once again and left the harbour to catch up with the Southern Resident Orca that were travelling fast toward San Juan Island, but before we did found them we had a chance to vist Race Rocks, Ecological Reserve to see three species of Pinnipeds, Harbour Seals, California and Steller Sea Lions. These magnificent mammals, the sea lions, were jockeying for the best spots on the rocks, and flexing their muscles while bellowing with their barks and growls. We then headed east and found the ‘Orca’ crossing Haro Strait. These wild killer whales were like popcorn, breaching in all directions. Our guests viewed these majestic creatures in awe. We identified the ones we saw , as members of L Pod. Our crew of Naturalists gave an in-depth discussion of all the wildlife to be found in these nutrient, rich waters. Capt. David brought us back to the harbour after a thrilling wildlife trip. Our delighted guests disembarked with big smiles. Another great trip !

Most of the images on the blog are shot with a 400 mm & 600 mm telephoto lenses. Because of our restrictions around wildlife (100+ meters), we use powerful lenses to better share orca activity that passengers see on their trips. Keep in mind this also heavily compresses space between objects. We also crop images for best blog viewing.
