Ocean Magic II Marine Wildlife Adventure Aug 4 3:30

August 8, 2012

These long, warm summer days continue to entice our local and international guests out on the water to experience a west coast adventure. The time has never been better to visit the picturesque west coast and its abundant wildlife. One never knows what one will see, during one of our trips. Guaranteed there will be something fantastic. Capt Gord and his crew members Dan, Jen and Casey headed the Ocean Magic deep south of Victoria and found the two Humpback whales that we had seen on two earlier trips in the Strait of Juan de Fuca. We watched these behemoths, giants of the deep, glide effortless through the flat calm water. Their huge, misty exhalations could be seen and heard in the silence of the late afternoon. We caught glimpses of their waving pectoral flipper as well as their pleated, expandable throats. These animals seem to travel up and down our coast line each year and are familiar to us. . These two active humpbacks were identified as ‘Split Fin ‘ and ‘Split Fluke ‘, with scientific # ‘s of BCZ0298 and BCX1068. We saw lots of tail/fluke rises and one breach that took us all by surprise. Most of these animals that visit this area in late summer and Fall are either on their way back from Alaska or have just been feeding along our Pacific North West shores most of the year. This area is known to have a specific population of Humpback Whales. A visit to Race Rocks Lighthouse gave us great looks at all four pinnipeds, Harbour and Elephant Seals, as well as California ad Steller Sea Lions. A pair of Bald Eagles were seen on the outer rocks. What a great adventure we all had this gorgeous August afternoon.

Most of the images on the blog are shot with a 400 mm & 600 mm telephoto lenses. Because of our restrictions around wildlife (100+ meters), we use powerful lenses to better share orca activity that passengers see on their trips. Keep in mind this also heavily compresses space between objects. We also crop images for best blog viewing.
