David, our Capt for the day took the Ocean Magic vessel toward San Juan Island where we had reports of whales, the Southern Resident Orca, salmon eaters. Conditions were ideal for our two schedule trips, made especially exciting because of sightings of whales, the spectacular scenery, warm sunshine, Harbour Seals, and one of Victoria’s Tall ships, the ” Pacific Swift” . Naturalists, Dan, Jen and Casey provide interesting information for our guests, about the variety of marine mammals to be found in these rich, cold waters of the Salish Sea. We were able to identify L 87, ‘ Onyx ‘, a 20 yr old male who now swims with an older female, J 8, ‘Spieden ‘ from J Pod. Three other members of L Pod were in the same vicinity. One of the whales surprised us during their play activity, with spyhop behaviours. This activity always thrills the guests on board. It was another wonderful whale watching trip on a bright sunny, summer day.
Most of the images on the blog are shot with a 400 mm & 600 mm telephoto lenses. Because of our restrictions around wildlife (100+ meters), we use powerful lenses to better share orca activity that passengers see on their trips. Keep in mind this also heavily compresses space between objects. We also crop images for best blog viewing.
