Ocean Magic Marine Wildlife Adventure Aug 19 3:30

August 26, 2013

The Prince of Whales crew of the Ocean Magic II, Capt. Jeff, Jen, Casey and Lindsay, headed the vessel out of Victoria Harbour and set a course west toward Race Rocks Lighthouse where our guests were treated to the sights and sounds of this incredible haul-out for two types of sea lions and seals. This trip at 3.30pm, Aug 19th was able to view California and Steller Sea lions, along with Harbour Seals. Many Pigeon Guillemotts, sea birds, were foraging in the fast moving tide. The wind and waves provided some texture to the water, but the sky was clear, so it wasn’t long before we found the T 30’s again, the Transient Orca that had been seen on the earlier trip. These marine mammal hunters, a family of 5, were traveling fast toward the west, so they often had their spray covered heads cresting the waves. It was an awesome sight. Our guests were treated to some of the wonderful wildlife to be seen in these waters and were thrilled with their west coast trip.

Most of the images on the blog are shot with a 400 mm & 600 mm telephoto lenses. Because of our restrictions around wildlife (100+ meters), we use powerful lenses to better share orca activity that passengers see on their trips. Keep in mind this also heavily compresses space between objects. We also crop images for best blog viewing.
