Ocean Magic Marine Wildlife Adventure July 18

July 22, 2013

The glorious west coast sunny weather continues, and there is no better time to take a wildlife trip with Prince of Whales. We had reports of Orca out east so left the dock with Capt. Jeff and crew members Mika, Jen, and Casey on board. Our guests were ready for an exciting adventure. We travelled past Trial, Chatham and Discovery, Islands, then across Haro Strait to Hein Bank where we encountered 9 Whales, the Transient Killer Whales that prey upon marine mammals. These were two family groups, females with youngsters traveling together. They appeared to be the T 37’s and the T34’s. We watched them zig-zag along the west coast of San Juan Island, taking long dives and leaving us to guess where they would surface. Eventually they headed north up Haro Strait. Our expert crew members shared a wealth of knowledge with our guests as they watched with awe and wonder at these wild creatures of the deep. It is always so satisfying to see these marine mammals swimming free in their own habitat. We returned to the dock full of smiles.

Most of the images on the blog are shot with a 400 mm & 600 mm telephoto lenses. Because of our restrictions around wildlife (100+ meters), we use powerful lenses to better share orca activity that passengers see on their trips. Keep in mind this also heavily compresses space between objects. We also crop images for best blog viewing.
