Ocean Magic Marine Wildlife Adventure July 2 3:30

July 7, 2013

The magic of whales continued all afternoon. Capt Jeff and crew members , Mika , Lindsay and Claire headed the 3.30 Ocean Magic II out of the harbour to encounter the 6 Transient killer whales that were now heading past San Juan Island and points west. The wind and waves had flattened out so finding marine mammals was much easier. The two family groups , the T 75’s and T 77’s had slowed considerably in their travels. They were in resting mode. The two males stayed close to the females and their youngsters. A large freighter headed up Haro Strait, while we were watching the killer whales. They would take 4-5 breaths at the surface before they took a longer dive. We headed out once again, to find more wildlife in other areas. Harbour seals on rocks were seen at Trial Island as well as an adult Bald Eagle. Our crew shared their fascinating stories of the amazing marine mammals to be found in these waters. Everyone was happy as we disembarked at the dock.

Most of the images on the blog are shot with a 400 mm & 600 mm telephoto lenses. Because of our restrictions around wildlife (100+ meters), we use powerful lenses to better share orca activity that passengers see on their trips. Keep in mind this also heavily compresses space between objects. We also crop images for best blog viewing.
