Our second trip today took us back across Haro Strait. With ideal conditions all around Capt Gord, and crew members headed us to where the Orca were swimming. Individuals were spread out off shore of San Juan Island. At this time of year this area seems to be one of the whales favourite areas, to swim, socialize, forage and to play. It is fascinating to watch how they interact with members of another pod. We observed 4 members of L Pod, the L 72’s and L 87, ‘Onyx ‘ foraging. L87, a 20 yr old male prefers to swim with J Pod, instead of his own L Pod, and has done so for almost two years. An older female J8, appears to have adopted him, since he has lost is mother. J 8 and L 87 are often seen swimming near each other. These whales are extremely family oriented and the males especially, never leave their mothers for their entire lives. Our time with these magnificent marine mammals was soon over but we were able to enjoy a quick visit to Trail Island to view Harbour Seals. It was another great trip with Prince of Whales.

Most of the images on the blog are shot with a 400 mm & 600 mm telephoto lenses. Because of our restrictions around wildlife (100+ meters), we use powerful lenses to better share orca activity that passengers see on their trips. Keep in mind this also heavily compresses space between objects. We also crop images for best blog viewing.
