Ocean Magic Marine Wildlife Adventure May13 12:15

May 18, 2012

Capt Gord and crew members, Jen, Casey and Emily provided a wonderful and informative afternoon trip, this special Sunday afternoon. With calm water and blue sky above, we were in for great viewing or these picturesque and productive waters off the west coast. The Ocean Magic vessel headed out of the harbour and turned west insearch of those illusive ‘ Orca ‘ . We had great views of Steller Sea Lions, Harbour and Elephant Seals, longing on rocks at Race Rocks, Ecological Marine Reserve. This is one of the most northerly haul-out and birthing areas for Elephant Seals. It was exciting to see so many at the top of middle rock. Several groups of Rhinoceros Auklets , sea birds, were also seen as well as Harbour Porpoise during our sweep of the Strait of Juan de Fuca in search of Orca. Unfortunately these charismatic whales remained illusive this afternoon. Our guests on board were very pleased with the variety of wildlife to be found in this area. It was yet another great trip with Prince of Whales.

Most of the images on the blog are shot with a 400 mm telephoto lens. Because of our restrictions around wildlife (100+ meters), we use powerful lenses to better share orca activity that passengers see on their trips. Keep in mind this also heavily compresses space between objects. We also crop images for best blog viewing.
