Ocean Magic Marine Wildlife Adventure Oct 26

October 30, 2013

Today’s Marine Wildlife Adventure was pure magic! Our skipper Jeff headed us out south west to find Transient Killer Whales. Our crew of Casey, Mika and Jen passed along to our guests a wealth of information about this amazing marine ecosystem. These apex marine predators were working their way south, rising as a group for air and then back down. This was just the beginning of our adventure, we then headed west past Race Rocks Ecological Reserve and found Resident Killer Whales off Beecher Bay. They were headed northwest, spread out all over. There were members from each pod, J’s K’s and L’s. There were spy hops, breeching and fluking. Truly an awesome experience to have both types of Orca on one trip. Next we headed closer to shore to find three Humpback Whales. We viewed two from a distance as they dove deep, raising their tails high into the air. We then had the third humpback rise closer and head our way until it dove deep raising its massive tail high above the water. Next we took a tour of Race Rocks Ecological Reserve. Here we viewed Steller Sea Lions, California Sea Lions, Harbour Seals and Elephant Seals. Yet another amazing adventure with Prince of Whales!

Most of the images on the blog are shot with a 400 mm & 600 mm telephoto lenses. Because of our restrictions around wildlife (100+ meters), we use powerful lenses to better share orca activity that passengers see on their trips. Keep in mind this also heavily compresses space between objects. We also crop images for best blog viewing.
