Ocean Magic Wildlife Adventure Aug 12 12:15

August 19, 2011

It was one of those interesting summer days when the Ocean Magic left the harbour under clear blue skies and then travelled through a wall of fog that shrouded the west side of San Juan Island. The whales had been reported in this vicinity. Capt. Gord in the wheel house navigated through the fog that created some ethereal moments. We could hear the Orca, the Southern Resident whales all around us as sound travels well across water. With our motors in neutral whales would emerge from the fog as ghostly apparitions. It was fascinating to watch as they surfaced and then disappeared. One can be pleasantly surprised by the unexpected, here on this beautiful and spectacular, Pacific west coast of BC. Our return to the harbour brought us past Trail Island where we saw the sun once again and some Harbour Seals. It was another memorable trip for our guests once again.

Most of the images on the blog are shot with a 400 mm telephoto lens. Because of our restrictions around wildlife (100+ meters), we use powerful lenses to better share orca activity that passengers see on their trips. Keep in mind this also heavily compresses space between objects. We also crop images for best blog viewing.
