Ocean Magic Wildlife Adventure Aug 31 12:15

September 6, 2011

Our trip this afternoon took us out west insearch of Humpback Whales, but before we found these behemoths we found 4 Transient Orca, traveling close in-shore of Albert Head. They were taking long dives and heading toward Victoria. With ideal conditions all around, Capt Gord headed us toward Race Rocks Ecological Reserve to observe Steller and California Sea Lions jockeying for position on favourite haul-outs. Several were seen frolicking in Race Passage. Heading farther west, we encountered 2 Humpback Whales. One we have seen in these waters over several years. She had arrived with a new calf this year. It was exciting to watch these two traveling along together and taking deep dives. All too soon our wildlife trip was over and we had to return to the harbour. Our crew members, Liz and Dan shared a wealth of knowledge with our international guests. It was another great trip with Prince of Whales.

Most of the images on the blog are shot with a 400 mm telephoto lens. Because of our restrictions around wildlife (100+ meters), we use powerful lenses to better share orca activity that passengers see on their trips. Keep in mind this also heavily compresses space between objects. We also crop images for best blog viewing.
