Ocean Magic Wildlife Adventure Aug 5 3:30

August 6, 2011

Capt. Gord headed the 3.30pm Ocean Magic II out of the harbour and east toward San Juan Island. Some members of L Pod were still foraging off shore when we arrived, even though many whales seen on the earlier trips today, had headed north. The L 22 family of three were identified, a female and her two male offspring. Another male L 85, who likes to be with this family, gave us good looks of how Orca chase salmon. Although the wind was up and the water somewhat choppy, our guests enjoyed the ride, the spectacular scenery and the privilege of seeing the whales foraging. It appeared that the local commercial fishing fleet were busy hauling in salmon too. A good sign that there is plenty of fish running at this time. Our crew members Mika, Mckyla and Brandon gave an in-depth account of the amazing diversity of marine life to be found in these waters. Some of our guests enjoying the ‘Prince of Whales ‘ trip included a tour group from Florida.

Most of the images on the blog are shot with a 400 mm telephoto lens. Because of our restrictions around wildlife (100+ meters), we use powerful lenses to better share orca activity that passengers see on their trips. Keep in mind this also heavily compresses space between objects. We also crop images for best blog viewing.
