Ocean Magic Wildlife Adventure July 16 9:00

July 18, 2011

The Ocean Magic Wildlife Adventure set out of Victoria’s inner harbour into the mist. Our fully equipped Ocean Magic II had no problems with the fog, radar on, we headed east to San Juan Island in search of Orca. We worked the water searching for the elusive killer whales. Our skipper Scotty was working the radio’s as well, and soon we were on our way to a report of Orca. We arrived south of Discovery Island and took in the sights of Orca’s in the mist. These were members of J pod and L pod, slowly headed east along the kelp beds off Discovery Island. There was a few spy hops mixed in with our sightings as the fog swirled by. Truly a magical viewing of these apex predators. This was an amazing adventure with Prince of Whales!

Most of the images on the blog are shot with a 400 mm telephoto lens. Because of our restrictions around wildlife (100+ meters), we use powerful lenses to better share orca activity that passengers see on their trips. Keep in mind this also heavily compresses space between objects. We also crop images for best blog viewing.
