What’s a little rain and cloud cover when there are reports of Orca in these waters almost every day. It is amazing to head out of the harbour in the big boat ‘ Ocean Magic II ‘ and take in a wildlife adventure, that includes birds, marine mammals, scenery and WHALES. Capt. Scott in the wheelhouse and crew members Liz and Mika were there to see that our guests would have a memorable and educational trip. We found members of the Southern Resident community of Orca, K, J and L Pod over at San Juan Island. They were tail-lobbing, and rolling on to their backs. K 20 and her youngster K 38 were seen along with ‘ Mike ‘J 26. L 41, ‘Mega ‘ a large male from L Pod, swam by. An enthusiastic female Orca breached much to the joy of the guests. A research vessel with ‘Tucker ‘, the black, Orca scat sniffing dog, was following the whales. A few Harbour Porpoise and some Harbour Seals added interest to yet another great trip with Prince of Whales.
Most of the images on the blog are shot with a 400 mm telephoto lens. Because of our restrictions around wildlife (100+ meters), we use powerful lenses to better share orca activity that passengers see on their trips. Keep in mind this also heavily compresses space between objects. We also crop images for best blog viewing.
