The Ocean Magic II slipped from Victoria’s picturesque inner harbour and sailed out past the breakwater into flat calm seas with patchy clouds above. We were all eyes on the water searching for signs of wildlife. Our Skipper Scotty with his keen eyes, soon had spotted Orca! These were members of L pod. With Mika a Marine Bilogist and Liz and Dan our Naturalists, we answered all questions and pass along a great deal of marine wildlife information. Mika identified all the whales and pointed out the L12’s and L22’s as they gently rose for air in a resting/sleeping formation. Our trip then took us through Race Rocks Ecological Reserve. This small Island chain is the home for a variety of sea birds, harbour seals and sea lions. This again was a perfect morning on the water with Prince of Whales!
Most of the images on the blog are shot with a 400 mm telephoto lens. Because of our restrictions around wildlife (100+ meters), we use powerful lenses to better share orca activity that passengers see on their trips. Keep in mind this also heavily compresses space between objects. We also crop images for best blog viewing.
