Ocean Magic Wildlife Adventure July 23 3:30

July 25, 2011

The summer weather continues with bold blue skies ,calm water and picturesque scenery. With plenty of sightings of Southern Resident Orca around, our wildlife trips are everything our guests could wish for. Capt Scott headed the Ocean Magic, this Saturday afternoon east to encounter the whales off San Juan Island. They had been seen in this vicinity all day, foraging for their favourite food, Chinook Salmon. Our Naturalists, Liz , Mckyla and Biologist Mika gave an educational talk on the marine life to be found in these very cold waters. We could see the whales breaching repeatedly, and the tiny K 44 baby of 10 days old, was seen swimming along-side its mother, K 27. Members of J pod were also foraging with K Pod on this trip. Great sightings of Mt Baker, Mt Rainier in Washington State and the Pacific Swift, tall ship out of Victoria added interest for yet another amazing trip with Prince of Whales.

Most of the images on the blog are shot with a 400 mm telephoto lens. Because of our restrictions around wildlife (100+ meters), we use powerful lenses to better share orca activity that passengers see on their trips. Keep in mind this also heavily compresses space between objects. We also crop images for best blog viewing.
