Ocean Magic Wildlife Adventure June 19 12:15

June 21, 2011

Our !2:15 Ocean Magic Wildlife Adventure took us east to San Juan Island. Here Capt. Gord put us in excellent position to view J26 Mike, a large male killer whale and a member of J pod. We watched as he worked the water, three to four breaths then down for 5 to 6 minutes. His tall dorsal fin cutting through the cold clear waters in search of salmon. Our crew of Liz, Dan and Brandon gave our passengers plenty of information on Orca behavior and their environment. Capt. Gord then repositioned the Ocean Magic to view a group of four Orca working along a half mile behind J26. They were defiantly in feeding behavior, up on top chasing salmon, then back on deep dives looking for more. This was a great encounter with our Resident Killer Whales, and yet another great adventure with Prince of Whales!

Most of the images on the blog are shot with a 400 mm telephoto lens. Because of our restrictions around wildlife (100+ meters), we use powerful lenses to better share orca activity that passengers see on their trips. Keep in mind this also heavily compresses space between objects. We also crop images for best blog viewing.
