Ocean Magic Wildlife Adventure June 23 12:15

June 26, 2011

It was another great day on the water with plenty of sunshine and plenty of whale sightings. Capt. Scott and his crew members Liz and Mika headed the 12.15 Ocean Magic 2 vessel east once we left the harbour. We were on our way to San Juan Island, Washington State, where reports of Orca had come in. On our way over we noticed that the cruise ship season was well underway as well as the Pacific Swift, a Tall Ship based in Victoria flying her sails. Our sister ship, the ‘Ocean Magic ‘ from the Vancouver run headed into the harbour just as we left. We found members of J and K Pods foraging inshore of San Juan Island close to False Bay. Their behaviours indicated that they were chasing after their favourite food, salmon. It was a lovely encounter with these magical, marine mammals on a bright sunny afternoon.

Most of the images on the blog are shot with a 400 mm telephoto lens. Because of our restrictions around wildlife (100+ meters), we use powerful lenses to better share orca activity that passengers see on their trips. Keep in mind this also heavily compresses space between objects. We also crop images for best blog viewing.
