Whales continue to be spotted almost daily in these rich cold, waters of the west coast. Sunshine with tranquil water made for a great afternoon wildlife trip in a yellow Zodiac. Skipper Jeff, ”Ice-Man” , headed us toward Middle Bank where we encountered several members of L Pod, the fish eating whales of the Southern Resident community of Orca. They were well off shore of San Juan Island and were busy foraging for their favourite food, salmon. It was awesome to watch them as they pursued their prey. Common Murres were seen flying and swimming on the surface. Several bait-balls with gathering gulls and sea birds on the surface were observed on our return to the harbour. It was another fabulous encounter with these magical creatures, the ORCA.
Most of the images on the blog are shot with a 400 mm telephoto lens. Because of our restrictions around wildlife (100+ meters), we use powerful lenses to better share orca activity that passengers see on their trips. Keep in mind this also heavily compresses space between objects. We also crop images for best blog viewing.
