The skies were grey, winds calm as the Ocean Magic II slipped out of its berth in Victoria’s inner harbour. Capt. David headed the 9am Ocean Magic II vessel with crew members, Dan and Jenn, out of the harbour and west. We stopped off at Race Rocks Ecological Reserve and had great looks at Harbour Seals and Elephant Seals. Then Capt. David swept us east on the search for Orca. We crossed Haro Strait to follow up on a report of Killer Whales. We found members of J pod off San Juan Island in light fog. These charismatic animals were traveling fast, northward toward the Canadian Gulf Islands and points beyond. Our time with these incredible, fish eating Orca provided a lasting impression for our guests as did the picturesque scenery of the west coast. It was another wonderful adventure with Prince of Whales!
Most of the images on the blog are shot with a 400 mm & 600 mm telephoto lenses. Because of our restrictions around wildlife (100+ meters), we use powerful lenses to better share orca activity that passengers see on their trips. Keep in mind this also heavily compresses space between objects. We also crop images for best blog viewing.
