The incredible September weather continues, creating ideal conditions for spotting marine wildlife out in the nutrient, rich waters off Victoria. Sunday was no exception! With flat calm water, plenty of sunshine and wildlife to be seen , the Ocean Magic set sail with Capt. Gord in the wheelhouse and naturalists, Dan and Emily on board. We headed west toward Race Rocks Lighthouse to seek some Elephant and Harbour Seals. This location is a great ‘haul-out ‘ for two species of sea lion as well, the Steller and California. Their noisy presence can always be heard, with growling and barking. The swimming California Sea Lions were particularly playful with leaps and bounds into the air. From this location we headed south and east to encounter a mother humpback whale with her energetic calf, that wowed our guests with breaching, and tail lob behaviours. It was an amazing show. What a fantastic trip and within 30-40 mins travel time just off the harbour of Victoria. This is one of the best locations to view the amazing wildlife to be found in BC waters. Another amazing trip with Prince of Whales.
Most of the images on the blog are shot with a 400 mm & 600 mm telephoto lenses. Because of our restrictions around wildlife (100+ meters), we use powerful lenses to better share orca activity that passengers see on their trips. Keep in mind this also heavily compresses space between objects. We also crop images for best blog viewing.
