Our Skipper Scotty slipped the Ocean Magic II from its berth in Victoria’s inner harbour. Today was a special day, it was Canada Day, Canada’s 144th birthday. Mother nature provided an amazing show this day, the skies were clear, the sun shining, and the seas calm. We headed west to Race Rocks in our search for marine wildlife, and it was not long before Capt. Scott spotted Orca! South of Race Rocks he found members of J Pod, they were in traveling formation heading east towards San Juan island. Capt. Scott put us in perfect position to view these magnificent whales. Our first mate Mika, a marine biologist and Dan our naturalist answered out guests questions and passed along some great information on this wonderful marine environment. We then to a pass through Race Rocks Ecological Reserve and observed Elephant Seals, Harbour Seals and Sea Lions. This was yet another wonderful marine adventure with Prince of Whales!
Most of the images on the blog are shot with a 400 mm telephoto lens. Because of our restrictions around wildlife (100+ meters), we use powerful lenses to better share orca activity that passengers see on their trips. Keep in mind this also heavily compresses space between objects. We also crop images for best blog viewing.
