Vancouver is a popular destination for whale watching, with a variety of species that can be found in the waters off the coast. If you live in Vancouver or you’re planning a trip to Vancouver and want to go whale watching, it’s important to know when the best time to go is. In this blog, we’ll explore the whale watching season in Vancouver, as well as the best time of year to go.

WHEN IS THE WHALE WATCHING SEASON IN VANCOUVER?

The whale watching season in Vancouver typically runs from April to October, with the peak season occurring from May to September.  During this time, a variety of whale species can be found in the waters off the coast, including killer whales (also known as orcas), Humpback whales, and Grey whales. Our tours will resume on April 7th 2023, and will run until November 5th 2023. This will give you ample time to view our incredible wildlife during the peak season! 

BEST TIME OF YEAR TO GO WHALE WATCHING

While the whale watching season in Vancouver runs from April to October, the best time to go will depend on your interests and the types of whales you hope to see.

Here’s a breakdown of the best times to views different whale species:

  • Killer whales (orcas): If you want to see killer whales, you will have great chances to see them in BC year round! The very best time to go whale watching to view them is from April to November, during peak season. This is when killer whales are most active and can often be seen hunting and playing in the waters off the coast.
  • Humpback whales: Humpback whales can be seen in the waters off the coast of Vancouver from April to November, but many often remain year around.
  • Grey whales: Grey whales can be seen in the waters off the coast of Vancouver from March to June, as they migrate north to their summer feeding grounds in Alaska.
  • Minke whales: Minke whales can be seen in the waters off the coast of Vancouver year-round, but they are most commonly seen from May to October.
  • Fin whales: Fin whales can often be seen in the waters off the coast of Vancouver from May to October.

So, the best time to go whale watching in Vancouver will depend on your interests and the types of whales you hope to see.
