Orca Rubbing Beaches

East of Telegraph Cove along the Johnstone Strait is the Robson Bight, a breathtaking and ecologically diverse area known for its stunning coastal scenery and rich marine life. This pristine stretch of coastline is home to various marine species including whales, seals, and seabirds, making it a popular destination for nature enthusiasts and eco-tourists. Protecting the Robson Bight is essential to preserving the natural beauty and biodiversity of British Columbia’s coastline, and efforts are ongoing to ensure the sustainability of this unique ecosystem.

The Strider Rubbing Beach, used by the Northern Resident orcas, is a fascinating beach where particular behaviour is observed by these intelligent marine mammals. Orcas are known to visit specific beaches where they engage in a behaviour known as “rubbing,” where they rub their bodies against smooth pebbles or rocks to exfoliate and remove dead skin. The Strider Rubbing Beach is one of these unique locations where orcas engage in this behaviour. It provides researchers and wildlife enthusiasts a rare opportunity to observe these magnificent animals up close in their natural habitat. Visit Orca Lab’s live webcams to see it for yourself!

Both Robson Bight and the Strider Rubbing Beach are essential sites for conservation and research, highlighting the interconnectedness of marine ecosystems and the need to protect these fragile environments. The reserve holds legal designation under the Species at Risk Act as Critical Habitat for Northern Resident Killer Whales, serving as a sanctuary for these whales. All boaters aboard motorized or non-motorized vessels are urged to refrain from entering the reserve. This measure aims to minimize disturbance to the whales during essential activities, such as feeding and utilizing rubbing beaches. Visitors to these areas require a permit and are encouraged to respect the environment, follow designated guidelines, and appreciate the beauty and wonder of British Columbia’s coastal treasures!
