This morning, the calm waters of Victoria’s Inner Harbour came alive with unexpected visitors: the T109A matriline, a well-known family of Bigg’s (Transient) killer whales!
Hundreds of visitors were treated to a rare sight as this family, also known as the “Runaways,” ventured deep into the harbour, just steps from downtown. The whales were observed hunting and playing, showcasing their hunting skills as they navigated between stopped ferries, sailboats, and sea planes.
Among the group was T109A8, the youngest calf in the family, sticking close to its family. The T109As are part of the Bigg’s killer whale population, known for their stealthy hunting techniques and preference for marine mammals like seals and sea lions. Unlike their fish-eating Resident cousins, Bigg’s orcas are more fluid in their travel patterns, often covering great distances and showing up in unexpected places, just like today!
Seeing killer whales in such a busy, urban harbour is a powerful reminder of the resilience of marine life and the richness of the Salish Sea ecosystem. At Prince of Whales, we’re always thrilled to share these moments with our guests, and days like this are why we do what we do.
Stay tuned and keep your eyes on the water when you’re visiting BC, you never know who might show up next!
