At Prince of Whales, we’re dedicated to delivering unforgettable whale-watching experiences and protecting the oceans that support the incredible wildlife we cherish. Have you ever considered where your trash ends after you dispose of it? Unfortunately, much of it winds up in our waterways, threatening marine ecosystems and the creatures that call them home.
The Hidden Journey of Trash
Each year, millions of tons of waste enter our oceans, largely due to poor waste management and stormwater runoff. Plastics, which break down into microplastics, particularly threaten marine life. Fish, seabirds, and whales can mistake these fragments for food, leading to ingestion, malnutrition, and often death. Even if you live far from the coast, your trash can end up in the ocean, carried by wind and water.
Taking Action: Cleaning Up the Gorge Waterway
As a company that relies on the ocean’s health, we’re committed to making a difference. In partnership with the Surfrider Foundation and Transport Canada, we recently cleaned up over 380 kg of trash from the Gorge Waterway. From plastic debris to abandoned fishing gear, we removed harmful materials that pose severe risks to local wildlife. These efforts protect marine life from ingesting plastics and entanglement in discarded fishing gear.
How You Can Help
At Prince of Whales, we believe in leading by example. Every piece of trash removed from the water is one less hazard to marine life. Together, through small yet meaningful actions, we can help keep the oceans clean and safe for future human and marine generations.
Combating marine pollution demands collective action from all of us. Reducing single-use plastics, properly disposing of waste, and participating in clean-ups are simple ways to make an impact. Join us in our efforts by bringing reusable items on your tours and becoming involved in local clean-up events, like the one we recently led in the Gorge Waterway.
