Winter is peak season for Bigg’s (transient) orcas, which frequent the waters around southern Vancouver Island as they hunt seals and sea lions. These highly active predators travel in small family groups and are known for their dynamic surfacing, close shorelines, and engaging behaviour, making winter an incredible time to see them in action. In addition, a number of humpback whales now remain in BC waters year-round, choosing not to migrate south thanks to abundant winter feeding opportunities. Spotting a humpback against a backdrop of snow-dusted mountains and moody winter skies is a truly unforgettable experience.
