Sponsoring Shoreline Cleanups on Vancouver Island

Prince of Whales

This Earth Month, Prince of Whales is proud to deepen our commitment to ocean health and coastal conservation. Our $10,000 contribution to the Surfrider Foundation, specifically supporting the Shoreline Cleanup Supporting Sponsorship, allows their team to continue their efforts in maintaining local shorelines clean!

This initiative reflects our belief that hands-on, community-driven action is one of the most effective ways to protect the environments we operate in every day. Our team regularly participates in beach and shonereline clean ups to physically be part of the solution in maintaining our ecosystem clean and healthy.

We are honoured to support Surfrider, an organization dedicated to protecting oceans, water quality and beaches through conservation, activism, research, and education. Our focus is on supporting Surfrider’s Vancouver Island South efforts, as our home base is in Victoria, and we interact with this coastline daily. Their work brings together communities to remove waste, improve water quality, and advocate for long-term environmental protection.

The impact of shoreline pollution is more dramatic than many realize. Plastic that washes ashore can seriously harm wildlife both in the ocean and on land.

Animals often mistake plastic for food. Seabirds, fish, and even mammals can ingest small pieces, which can block their stomachs, reduce their ability to eat real food, and lead to starvation. Larger items like bags and packaging are especially dangerous because they resemble prey like jellyfish. Plastic can also cause entanglement. Birds, seals, and other animals can get caught in fishing line, ropes, or debris, which can restrict movement, cause injury, or even lead to drowning.

On shore, the impact continues. Land-based animals like raccoons, deer, and birds can interact with washed-up debris, spreading it further or becoming entangled themselves. Over time, plastics break down into microplastics, which enter the food chain and affect entire ecosystems.

What washes ashore does not stay there. It moves through habitats, affecting wildlife at every level.

At Prince of Whales, we believe that protecting the ocean means protecting the entire coastal system. Supporting shoreline cleanups is a direct, meaningful way to make a difference, and we are proud to stand alongside organizations like Surfrider to help keep coastlines clean, healthy, and thriving!
