A Celebration of Cinema in Victoria

Prince of Whales

For the 32nd year, Victoria is hosting a celebration of cinema that brings the community together: the Victoria Film Festival (VFF). Once again, Prince of Whales is proud to be a sponsor of an event that continues to play an important role in the cultural life of Vancouver Island.

Taking place over ten days from February 6–15, the Victoria Film Festival presents an impressive lineup of feature films, documentaries, and short films, alongside special screenings and events held across the city. Whether you’re a dedicated film lover or simply curious to experience something new, VFF offers a unique opportunity to engage with powerful stories while supporting the arts in our community.

This year’s festival showcases 96 feature films, including 42 Canadian films, highlighting the depth of homegrown storytelling. The international lineup features films from more than 20 countries, creating a festival experience that balances local voices with global perspectives.

Highlighting British Columbia–Rooted Films

The Victoria Film Festival proudly features films with deep roots in British Columbia, spotlighting stories shaped by the landscapes, artists, and communities of this region. A few highlights include:

Green Valley

Playing Feb 9 at 3:15 pm, Capitol 6 Theatre

Set on an island off the Pacific coast, this intimate documentary follows Henry Verschuur and the multi-generational, off-grid farm he built from a once clear-cut landscape. Directed by Morgan Rhys Tam, who lives on the farm, the film offers an honest look at sustainable living, cooperation, and our connection to the land, while reflecting on how disconnected many of us have become from our food systems.

The Painted Life of E.J. Hughes

Playing Feb 8 at 3:00 pm, The Vic Theatre

This archival documentary brings British Columbia vividly to life through the work of one of the province’s most celebrated painters. The film captures the coastlines, towns, and evolving cultural identity that Hughes preserved on canvas throughout his career.

Blue Heron

Playing Feb 7 at 7:00 pm, Star Sidney & Feb 10 at 7:45 pm, The Vic Theatre

Shot on Vancouver Island and directed by Sophy Romvari, Blue Heron draws directly from island life, using local settings to tell an intimate, award-winning story rooted in place and memory.

Spotlight on Vancouver Island: CineVic

VFF also shines a spotlight on local filmmakers through its partnership with CineVic. Founded in 1991, CineVic is an artist-run society that supports independent filmmakers and media artists on Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands. Deeply rooted in the local creative community, CineVic offers accessible programming, affordable equipment, professional development, and opportunities for filmmakers to share their work on the big screen.

Each year, CineVic partners with the Victoria Film Festival to present a curated showcase of locally made short films, celebrating the diversity of voices and genres emerging from our region. This year’s CineVic screening takes place on February 15 at 7:30 pm at the Roxy Theatre.

We’re honoured to support an organization that celebrates creativity, diversity, and meaningful storytelling. We encourage everyone to explore the lineup and experience what makes the Victoria Film Festival such a special event.
