How to Participate in this Growing Global Movement
Every July, millions of people around the world take part in Plastic Free July™, a global movement encouraging individuals to reduce their reliance on single-use plastics. While it may seem like one person’s choices can’t make a difference, small actions taken by many people can have a significant impact on our environment.
For those of us who spend time on the ocean, the effects of plastic pollution are impossible to ignore. Marine debris can entangle wildlife, damage sensitive habitats, and break down into tiny microplastics that persist in the environment for decades.
The good news? Reducing your plastic footprint is easier than you might think! We’ve put together a short list of ways we can all implement to cut down on our plastic consumption on a day-to-day basis.

1. Bring a Reusable Water Bottle
One of the simplest ways to reduce plastic waste is to carry a reusable water bottle. Disposable plastic bottles are among the most common items found during shoreline cleanups and can take hundreds of years to break down.

2. Refill Cleaning Products
Many communities now offer refill stations for products like hand soap, dish soap, and laundry detergent. We’ve adopted this practice in our Victoria office by reusing our existing containers and refilling them locally whenever possible. By extending the life of plastic that’s already in circulation, we reduce unnecessary packaging waste and help minimize the demand for new single-use plastics.

3. Recycle Properly
Not every type of plastic belongs in the recycling bin. Taking a few moments to understand your local recycling guidelines helps ensure recyclable materials actually get processed instead of ending up in a landfill.

4. Challenge Yourself to Buy Unpackaged or Bulk Goods
Purchasing pantry staples, cleaning products, or personal care items in bulk can significantly reduce plastic packaging. Another easy change is to skip the plastic produce bags at the grocery store. Most fruits and vegetables can be washed thoroughly at home, making the extra bag unnecessary.

5. Participate in a Shoreline Cleanup
One of the most rewarding ways to make an immediate difference is by joining a local beach or shoreline cleanup. Every piece of litter removed prevents it from breaking down into smaller fragments and helps protect marine wildlife. Even collecting a few pieces of debris during a walk along the beach contributes to healthier coastlines.
