Top 5 Marine Animals You Might Spot Alongside Whales in BC Waters
British Columbia is famous for its incredible whale watching opportunities, but did you know that the marine wildlife show doesn’t stop at whales? The waters off Vancouver Island and the BC coast are teeming with life, and a whale watching tour often includes surprise encounters with other amazing marine animals.
Here are five of the most exciting marine animals you might spot alongside whales on your next BC adventure:
1. Steller Sea Lions
The largest species of sea lion in the world, Steller sea lions are hard to miss. You might spot them hauled out on rocky shorelines, barking loudly and jostling for space, or swimming gracefully through the water. Fall is a great time to see these massive pinnipeds, as they gather in large numbers before heading to breeding sites.

2. Sea Otters (And the Best Time to See Ollie!)
Fall is one of the best times to spot sea otters along BC’s coast in the North Island, and if you’re in Victoria you might even see Ollie, our local favourite! Known for their playful personalities and adorable habit of floating on their backs, sea otters are a delight to watch. Ollie has become something of a celebrity in the area, often seen floating peacefully near familiar kelp beds. Guests regularly ask about him, and our crew always keeps an eye out on every tour. If you’re on board during a calm fall morning, keep your camera ready, this could be your chance to see BC’s most beloved sea otter in action!

3. Harbour Seals
Harbour seals are one of the most common marine mammals on the BC coast, but no less charming. Often seen lounging like bananas on rocks or logs, they’re curious and gentle animals with big, dark eyes. They can sometimes be spotted swimming near boats or poking their heads above the water to keep an eye on the action.

4. Porpoises
Fast, elusive, and sleek, Dall’s porpoises and harbour porpoises are often mistaken for small orcas due to their bold black and white coloration. They’re typically shy, but you might spot them on tours out of all our locations! Watching them dart through the waves is a thrill for any wildlife enthusiast.

5. Bald Eagles and Seabirds
While not marine mammals, bald eagles, cormorants, gulls, and other seabirds are a huge part of the coastal ecosystem. You’ll often see eagles perched high in shoreline trees or soaring overhead. During feeding events, seabirds may gather in large flocks, creating a dramatic and dynamic scene above the water.
