The Black and White Wonders of the Salish Sea: Northern Resident Killer Whales
The Salish Sea is home to a diverse range of marine life, including the Northern Resident killer whales. These magnificent creatures are one of three distinct populations of killer whales found in the western North Pacific, and they are a unique and important part of the marine ecosystem in the Salish Sea.
Northern Resident killer whales are known for their distinctive black and white markings, as well as their complex social behavior. These whales live in matrilineal groups, with each group consisting of several related families led by a matriarch. The groups are highly vocal and communicate with each other using a variety of clicks, whistles, and pulsed calls that are distinctive to their families.
There are approximately 34 matrilines and roughly 300 Northern Resident killer whales in the wild, and they are primarily found in the waters of British Columbia and Alaska. In the summer months, they migrate to the northern reaches of the Salish Sea to feed on the abundant salmon that spawn in the region. During this time, we see them often on our Telegraph Cove tours. During the winter, they travel to find new food sources within the area.
Northern resident killer whales are an important indicator species for the health of the Salish Sea ecosystem. They are at the top of the food chain, and play a critical role in maintaining the balance of the marine food web. Northern Residents feed on wild salmon, especially on Chinook. As such, they are also vulnerable to environmental threats, such as pollution, habitat loss, and declining salmon populations.
At Prince of Whales, we are committed to responsible and sustainable tourism practices that minimize our impact on the marine environment. We work closely with local conservation organizations, such as the Pacific Salmon Foundation and Oceanwise, and adhere to strict guidelines to ensure the safety and well-being of the whales and other animals we encounter.
