Victoria Winter Whale Watching

Prince of Whales

When most people think of whale watching in Victoria, they picture warm summer days and blue skies. But what happens when winter arrives? Do the whales disappear until spring?

Not quite! While some whales migrate south, others remain in the Salish Sea throughout the year. From killer whales travelling along the coastline to sea lions gathering on rocky shores, winter offers plenty of opportunities to experience British Columbia’s incredible marine wildlife.

Can You See Whales in Victoria During Winter?

Absolutely! Bigg’s killer whales can be found in the Salish Sea year-round, travelling throughout the region in search of marine mammals such as seals, sea lions, and porpoises.

Humpback whales are another exciting possibility. While most migrate south for winter, some remain in British Columbia’s coastal waters, making sightings possible even during the colder months.

Beyond whales, winter is a fantastic time to spot Steller and California sea lions, harbour seals, bald eagles, and a variety of seabirds.

Why Go Whale Watching in Winter?

Winter is a beautiful time to get out on the water around Victoria! With the sun sitting lower in the sky, the light is often beautiful, especially on clear days. The water can be surprisingly calm on many winter days, and with fewer boats out on the water, there’s a quieter feel to the whole experience. Victoria’s coastal location also means it enjoys plenty of clear, sunny days throughout the winter, making for some fantastic conditions to explore the Salish Sea.

And while the seasons change on land, the ocean is still home to wildlife year-round. Whales don’t take the winter off, so there’s still plenty to see out on the water!
