Every unforgettable whale watching experience begins with great wildlife, but it’s the people on board who transform it into something truly memorable. At Prince of Whales, our captains, naturalists, photographers, and guest services team share one goal: helping every guest leave with a deeper appreciation for the incredible wildlife and marine ecosystem of British Columbia.
Our crew members come from a wide range of backgrounds. Some hold degrees in marine biology, environmental science, or ecology. Others have spent decades navigating the waters of the Salish Sea and have built an unmatched understanding of local whale behaviour and marine ecosystems.
Together, they bring thousands of hours of experience on the water and a genuine passion for sharing it with every guest. Our team loves answering questions and sharing fascinating stories about the wildlife we encounter!
Why is Education Important to Us
We believe whale watching should be more than simply finding whales.
Throughout your tour, our certified Marine Naturalists explain whale behaviour, identify individual whales by name, discuss current conservation challenges, and point out the incredible diversity of wildlife surrounding us. Depending on the day, that may include killer whales, humpback whales, harbour seals, Steller sea lions, Dall’s porpoises, sea otters, bald eagles and dozens of other seabird species. Our onboard commentary is constantly evolving as new scientific discoveries emerge and local sightings change throughout the season.
Many members of our team spend their free time volunteering with conservation organizations, photographing marine wildlife, contributing to citizen science projects, or continuing their education about the Salish Sea. It’s one of the reasons Prince of Whales continues to invest in marine conservation through our Conservation Fund, supporting research projects across British Columbia while educating thousands of guests every season.
Captains Who Know These Waters
Operating safely around marine wildlife requires experience, patience, and an understanding of ever-changing ocean conditions. Our captains undergo extensive training and follow strict federal whale watching regulations designed to minimize disturbance to marine mammals. Every wildlife encounter is guided by respect first, ensuring animals always have the space they need to behave naturally.
Responsible wildlife viewing is a cornerstone of our operation and a responsibility we take seriously. But to ensure you see all the details of the wildlife we are watching, we include in every closed vessel tour a Free Photo Package! Our onboard photographers capture every trip using professional telephoto lenses that allow us to photograph wildlife from a safe distance while producing stunning, high-resolution images. Guests receive complimentary digital photos after their tour, allowing them to relive the experience long after returning home.
